YVONNE MANIPON

Born in Los Angeles, CA

Lives and works in Honolulu, HI

Born in Southern California and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Yvonne Manipon completed her Master in Arts Administration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Oregon, where she majored in Fine and Applied Arts and Art History.

Over the past 20 years, Yvonne has lived in both Hawaii and the Pacific NW where she has been painting landscapes, investigating the unique quality of light, textures, movement and atmosphere in each region.  All of her paintings are created on location “en plein air”.  Painting outdoors is invigorating and challenging for her. She enjoys the solitude, sounds, sites, fragrance, and drama of the outdoors. She is driven by the challenge of capturing directly onto canvas the essence of what inspires her.

Artist Statement:

“Form, color, light, textures and atmosphere found in nature are my inspiration.  The ever-changing sky-, sea- and land-scapes are a challenge for me to capture the moment and translate the reality of what I see.”

Influences:

Gustave Courbet, Eugene Delacroix, Pierre Bonnard, Lucian Freud, Emily Carr, Claude Monet, John Singer Sargent, Joaquin Sorolla, Franz Bischoff, Edgar Payne, William Wendt and the California Impressionists.

PU’U MAI SERIES

“Dragon” (29″ x 22″,water-based mixed media, NFS), s from a series I’m working on called “Pu’u Mai”, which means heart in Hawaiian. I am working on this personal series of mixed media paintings to explore the heart in a metaphorical, symbolic, illustrative, abstract and concrete way to get at the soul of what my heart is feeling during these difficult times. So much has happened over the last several years in our lives and my life. Making art is a good way to meditate on it all.
