Zoe Liu was born and raised in Hong Kong and currently resides in Honolulu, Hawai’i. She received her BFA from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, along with Outstanding Undergraduate Awards in Drawing and Digital Imaging. Since her studies, Zoe has developed her practice while working as a teaching artist at Honolulu Museum of Art and Oahu Art and Tech. She is also a new team member of Art Bento s program at Hawaii State Art Museum. Her works were featured in numerous exhibitions in Oahu, Chicago, Las Vegas, Portland and a number of international exhibitions including the Affordable Art Fair Hong Kong, Art Stage Singapore, Ink Asia 2017, Affordable Art Fair Singapore and Asia Contemporary Art Show. And her collection Let them be Kids was accepted and auctioned at Ravenel, Taipei in 2018.
Zoe primarily employs ink, acrylic, pastels, watercolor and charcoal on paper and panel. In her creative process, she activates the painting surface with ink-splashes, wet-on-wet technique, and later applies additive and subtractive processes in layers of abstract marks to force the figure images to come alive in her works. She investigates existential questions, and education styles between the East and the West. Her latest series Take Me back to the Garden is based on her meditation on growth, and inspiration from the Garden of Eden. These works can be read as a visualization of her teaching and spiritual experiences.
